"As widely acknowledged, the violent incidents having taken place during recent demonstrations against the French government’s project for new employment legislation (the controversial Loi Travail) were the work of so-called “casseurs”, i.e. opportunistic rioters intent on breaking glass. Yet, as correctly underlined by an article in Le Monde dated May 28, 2016, there is in fact “a whole galaxy of types” behind this catchword. Relying on media reports describing such events as confused mayhem detracting from the real object of demonstrations, the general public is often quite unable to distinguish between mere vandals on the rampage and organized groups such as the “Black Blocs”.
