"As the literary archetype of the serial femicide perpetrator — whatever its historical sources — the figure of Bluebeard stands alongside Don Juan as the archetype of the seducer, Faust as the archetype of the scholar who sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for universal knowledge, and Tristan and Isolde as the paragons of courtly love. Like Don Juan, Faust, and Tristan, Bluebeard has given rise to a genuine myth that has enjoyed an immense legacy in the West and has touched every art form. In France, the academician Charles Perrault definitively fixed its features through the tale entitled “La Barbe bleue” (“Bluebeard”), collected in 1697 in his Histoires ou contes du temps passé.
