"The Navy doesn't like gendarmes, but since I arrived in the Var department in southeastern France, I have witnessed so many acts of bravery and dedication on the part of the gendarmes [that it] has given me a deep admiration for the Gendarmerie." This unusual tribute, conveyed in confidence by a French Navy Captain (commandant de vaisseau) to Captain Geoffrey Jones, an OSS agent who had come to introduce him to a gendarme who was a member of the Resistance, reveals how little is known about the contribution of the Var gendarmes to the Provence landings.
