"“Very little is said about the gendarmerie joining the cause. However, it was effective and proved to be a valuable asset for the FFI [French Forces of the Interior] in the Île-de-France region.” This tribute from one of the main architects of the Liberation of Paris, Colonel Rol-Tanguy, raises questions about the role of the gendarmes in this historic event, as they have been overshadowed in the collective memory by the police officers of the Préfecture de Police (PP). This oversight seems all the more surprising given that the 6,000 men who made up this military force at the time gave it considerable potential in the face of the 20,000 Germans in the capital.
