"Kilstett, “a village in our Lower Alsace that, to tell the truth, had little reason to be well-known,” acknowledged Gendarmerie General (2S) Louis Beaudonnet in 2004, in the foreword to the book commemorating the historical events in which he himself had participated. Yet, in early January 1945, this town, located about fifteen kilometers from Strasbourg, took on particular significance due to its position along the route of Operation “Nordwind,” launched by the Germans to retake the city. Among the French defenders was a handful of guards from the Daucourt group, firmly determined to protect the Alsatian city. (...)"
